I began my teaching career as a teacher
of deaf/blind children. As a result, I have studied the life
of Helen Keller, and I have learned about the accomplishments
of Helen's teacher, Anne Sullivan Macy. The passage below is
from a poem about Helen's remarkable teacher.
To Anne Sullivan Macy
by Elaine Anderson
We marvel at Helen Keller,
Who was blind and deaf and dumb.
We marvel still more at her teacher,
At what patience and love have done.
To this soul that groped in darkness
You brought rays of mental light,
Those blinded eyes saw, through feeling,
And the long-deaf ears heard aright,
And the lips that were dumb now uttered
The great thoughts of a new-born soul;
The life that was cramped and clouded
Now blossomed, completed and whole.
